 the custom of tumen city to North Korea Background
Tumen City is located in the east sector of Jilin province,to the east of ChangBai Mountain and at lower reaches of Tumen River, between the latitudes of 42 46¡¯ and 43 43¡¯ and longitudes of 129 39¡¯ and 130 46¡¯. Eastward it is connected with Hunchun(an opening border city),westward with Yanji(the capital city of YanBian), southward with Longjing, northward with Wangqing county. To the southeast it is linked with Onseng County, Hamgyong Sanmaed of Korea by Tumen River.Tumen is a border and coastal city and is also the largest frontier port in Jilin province.
Tumen has four towns(Shixian, Chang¡¯an, Bingshui, Yueqing),one village(Hongguang)and three subdistrict offices(Xinhua, Xiangshang, Yuegong). Its total area is 1,142.3sq km with 139,000people.It has Korean, Chinese, Man and Hui nationalities. Among them, there are 82,000 Korean people, which takes up59%of the total population. Tumen, a city of a Korean majority, also inhabits other nationalities.
The climate of Tumen is continental humid monsoon climate of the min-temperature zone. Four seasons are very distinct. It is warm and fresh in spring, not too hot in summer, cool with little rain in autumn and not too cold in winter. Its average temperature of the year is 5.4 C and the average precipitation of the year is about 540mm.Inaddition,its yearly sunshine time is approximately 2100 hours with a frost-free period of about 128 days.
The growth and development of Tumen is based on industry. Over the 30 year since its establishment, its industry has been developed primarily by reformation, adjustment, and development. As a result, it has formed an industrial complex containing departments dealing with paper-making, oil chemistry, textiles, plastic technical instruments, building materials, foods and drinks, and coal etc. There are now 137 industrial enterprises and 31 special category enterprises consisting of foreignowned business, joint venture enterprises and cooperative enterprises in the city.Presently there are more than 1000kinds of products including paper,chemical fiber,socks, clothes, plastics and pyrimidine products, toughened glass, high-speed cyclone machines, lincrusta, Vaseline, drinks, and foods etc. There are 137 kinds of products among themc, e. g. paper,clothes, children¡¯s socks, Vaseline etc, which are being sold in more than 20 countries and regions including the USA, Canada, South Korea, Russia,Germany.Hongkongm,DPRKorea.83 kids have gained honor as awarded goods , province awarded goods, as well as,having won prizes for scientific and technological develoment. Some of the specialities are high-speed freezing cyclone, paper ,,children¡¯s sock and a series of tonic wine(eg.ants and snake wine etc).
Tumen has plenty of mineral resources so far. There are 8 kinks of metal mineral products and 9 kinds of non-metal mineral products that have been discovered. The metal mineral products are mainly copper, zinc, lead and emery. The non-metal mineral products are mainly coal, marble, granite, limestone and mineral water. In addition, there is an abundance of valuable specialty resources in Tumen i. E. applepear, apples, flowering crabapples, hawthorns, apicots, peaches, wild grapples, magnoliavines, fungi, mushrooms, glossy ganodermas, ginseng, the root of balloonflower and many other valuable plants.
There is more than 5000-hectare of land unexploited, 6524.7-hectare of natural grass-land,891.8-hectare of undergrasslands, 4802.2-hectare of grassy marshland,880 hectare of artificial pasture, constituting a total of 13,098.7 hetares. Therefore there is adequate feed resources for raising cattle, sheep, rabbits, deer, tussah and so on.
Tumen,being a coastal city, surrounded by mountains and rivers, has a beautiful environment, Its transportation system is very convenient too. There are many tourists sites, i. e. the Fengwu Reservoir, the RiGuang Mountain, the Tumen River Park, Guomen, the Inspection Office Building, all of which are famous for their beautiful and delightful sceneries and therefore attrace many tourists. There are other sites valuable for research and travel, e. g. historic sites, cultural relics and ruins. Besides these,Tumen has a vacation village abounding in minority traditions. So far, a one-day trip train excursion to Onseng, DPRK, has been opened. Later, a two-day trip line to Najin, will be opened, a 10-day excur-sion line to Pyongyang and a China-Korea-Russia excursion-lines, will be available. Tumen is also a transfer station leading directly to Changbai Mountain and JingBo Lake. Along the excursion line of Tianchi-Tumen River, one can view the two countries¡¯scenery at the same time.
